Anti-oxidants are substances that
protect our cells from cell damage. It neutralizes the free radicals. These free radicals destroy
the body cells and cause cell damage.
How
is cell damaged?
Cell damage is caused by
oxidative stress that releases free radicals in the body. These free radicals are unpaired electrons which scavenge the body cells to get an electron to
become a pair.
How
do Anti-oxidants protect our body?
Anti-oxidants
stabilize the free radicals by donating electrons to the free radicals and making
it stable and thus it protects the cell from damage and reduces the risk of
diseases.
Where
do we get Anti-oxidants?
Our body produces some
Anti-oxidants known as endogenous anti- oxidants. Also it is available in all
fruits and vegetables, dairy products and egg. Anti-oxidants obtained from
plants are called phytonutrients. Examples of plant based anti-oxidants are
vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, polyphenols, lycopene, selenium, lutein,
anthocyanin etc.
Each anti-oxidant has different
function and hence it is necessary to include variety of colourful vegetables and fruits
in our diet.
