Avial is an important vegetarian side dish in kanyakumari. It is prepared as semi solid side dish for either fish curry or any other vegetarian currys in kanyakumari.
It is very simple to make. Just cooking all the vegetables in water and add coconut paste and season it or first seasoning and then add vegetables and coconut paste.
Making Avial in mud pot gives the complete taste. Here in this post, I have made Avial in mud pot. Lets see how I made it.
Ingredients:
1/2 cucumber
1/2 plantain
1 drumstick
1/4 yam
1/4 pumpkin
1 carrot
5 to 6 beans
10 cluster beans
1 vertically chopped onion
4 green chillies
1/2 tablespoon turmeric powder
100 ml curd
To grind:
1/2 shell grated coconut
1/2 tablespoon cumin seeds
2 garlic cloves
Seasoning:
1 strand Curry leaf
1 tablespoon mustard seeds
4 tablespoon coconut oil
Pre-preparation for making avial:
- Chop all the vegetables vertically nearly 2 inches
- Wash the vegetables in water
- Chop onion and green chillies vertically
- Grind 1/2 shell grated coconut, cumin seeds and garlic cloves coarsely.
How to make kanyakumari style avial?
- Heat oil in the mud pot and add mustard seeds.
- When mustard seeds splutter, add curry leaves, onion and green chillies and saute it
- Then add the vegetables to the mud pot and toss it
- Cook the vegetables for 5 min without adding water
- After 5 min add 200 ml water 1/2 tablespoon turmeric powder and required salt and cook the vegetables.
- After the vegetables are cooked, add coconut jeera paste and stir with the back side of the silver laddle so that the vegetables do not break.
- Leave it for 3 min
- Then add little curd to give sour taste to the avial
- Now kanuakumari style avial is ready
- Instead of adding curd, tamarind juice can added while cooking the vegetables
- Or else sliced mango pieces can be added to give sourness to the avial
- Heat oil in mud pot
- Add sliced onion and green chillies and saute it
- Add the chopped vegetables
- Toss the mud pot
- Close the lid and cook for 5 min
- Open the lid and add 200ml water
- Add salt and turmeric powder
- And cook
- Add coconut paste
- Stir it
- Cook for 2 min
- Add 100 ml curd and stir
- Switch off the flame
- Avial is ready
This Avial can be used as side dish for adai dosa, sambhar rice, rasam or even fish curry.
It is very very healthy as we are adding many vegetables in this recipe. It fills us with complete vitamins and minerals.
