A healthy evening snack/Sundal/ Chickpea tadka/chana tadka


Sundal/ seasoned Chickpea are often given as prashadham in South Indian temple. We also used to have this as evening snack with tea. I have posted masala tea, butter tea in this blog which is an excellent combo to sundal. You can check it out here. Chick pea is rich in protein and very beneficial for growing children. Chana/ chick pea is one of my favourite legumes and I often make chana masala, kadala curry/chana gravy for chappathi, rice, and also for puttu, idli and dosa. Ingredients:
  • 1 cup boiled chickpeas
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 2 red chillies
  • 1 sprig curry leaf
  • Asafetida powder
  • ½ cup shredded coconut.
  • 2 tablespoon gingely oil.

How I prepared boiled chick peas for sundal?
  1. Soak one cup of chickpeas in water for 7 to 8 hours.
  2. After 8 hours drain the water and put the chickpeas into the pressure cooker and also add little salt.
  3. Add 2 cups of water in the pressure cooker and cook for 5 whistles
  4. After the pressure has been released naturally, open the lid.
  5. Now the boiled chickpeas are ready.

How did I prepare sundal?
  1. Heat oil in a pan and add 1 teaspoon mustard seeds, 2 red chillies and little asafetida powder and also curry leaves.
  2. When the mustard seeds have spluttered, add the boiled chick peas and stir well.
  3. Also sprinkle some salt.
  4. Now add ¼ cup of shredded coconut and stir for 30 seconds.
  5. Now chickpea tadka is ready.
  6. It is an excellent healthy snack recipe. I had this as evening snack with masala tea. This sundal is one of my healthy snack recipe.
Health tips:
  • We can strain the water used for boiling the chana in a cup and drink that broth. It is very healthy.
  • Also the bolied chickpeas can be eaten without tempering which is healthier as no oil will be added.
  • Seasoning with coconut, mustard and red chillies just enhances the taste of the chana.

Nutrition in chick pea:
  • Chick pea is rich in protein and fibre
  • It is rich in potassium.
  • Chick pea also has Iron, vitamin B6, Magnesium and selenium.

Health benefits of chick pea:
  • For people following vegetarian diet, chickpea is an excellent choice as it contains iron, protein, vitamins, selenium etc.
  • Protein is very essential for skin health and hair health. Chick peas helps to grow hair thicker and longer.
  • Chickpea is rich in dietary fibre. So it is bulking agent to the digestive system. it gives a feeling of fullness after eating . This fullness feeling reduces appetite and helps in weight management.
